Katergo Beach: How to Reach Folegandros' Crown Jewel

At the island's southern tip, walled between tall cliffs that drop into the sea, Katergo is the landscape on every postcard and cover shot of Folegandros. Sand and fine pebbles, a seabed that deepens fast into water of unreal clarity, and the islet of Makri closing the frame across the strait. There is zero infrastructure — no umbrellas, no canteen, no sun-beds — and that's exactly where the magic lives: you carry in what you need, and all you find is nature. The effort of access keeps numbers human even in August.

The overland route: from Chora or the port head south towards Livadi and follow the dirt road to its end, above the camping area — about 15–20 minutes on a 4×4 ATV. From there you continue on foot: a 15–20 minute descent on a stony path whose views reward every step. It calls for closed shoes or solid sandals — not flip-flops — a hat and water; the return is uphill and there's no midday shade. A scooter can manage the dirt road with experience; an ATV makes it a non-event.

The seaborne alternative: in summer, a small boat leaves Karavostasi port in the morning and drops you directly on the beach, returning in the afternoon. It's the ideal option for anyone skipping the footpath — families with small children, or days of serious heat. Sailings change with season and weather, so confirm at the port the day before. A smart combo for a perfect day: take the boat over, and your vehicle — parked at Karavostasi — is waiting for a dip at Vardia or dinner on the way back.

The Katergo packing list: plenty of water (at least 1.5 litres each), an umbrella or shade tent — natural shade is nearly nonexistent — sunscreen, a snorkel mask for the seabed, and snacks. Best time: morning to early afternoon; the sun slips behind the cliffs relatively early, so don't save Katergo for the end of the day. In a meltemi, Katergo usually stays sheltered — one of the safest southern picks on northerly-wind days. And the golden rule of undeveloped beaches: whatever you bring in, you carry out. The beauty of this place is everyone's responsibility.
