Folegandros Hidden Beaches: A Scooter & ATV Access Guide

Easy Riding Access: Beaches Reachable by Car, Scooter or Bus

For travelers seeking convenient, direct vehicle access, Folegandros offers several beautiful beaches with paved roads. Karavostasis Beach (Chochlidia), situated near the main port, is a pebbled, tree-lined bay with clear blue waters, easily reached on foot, by car, or by scooter. Nearby Vardia Beach lies just east of the port and is accessible via a short walk and stairs. The most popular and accessible beach on the island is Angali Beach, featuring a spectacular sweep of golden sand surrounded by high cliffs. The road from Chora to Angali is fully asphalted and suitable for automatic scooters, motorcycles, and ATVs. Parking is available outside the beach area. Additional small sandy beaches close to the port, such as Latinaki, Vitzenzou, and Pountaki, are also easily reached via the flat coastal road heading south toward the Livadi camping area.

Adventure & Solitude: Remote Beaches Reached by Boat or Hiking

The wildest and most dramatic coves on Folegandros require a touch of adventure to reach. Katergo Beach, an unspoiled cove of pebbles and sand, is widely considered the island's premier beach. It is accessible only via a challenging 30-minute foot trail or a 10-minute small boat ride from Karavostasis port (€8 return). Livadaki Beach, a quiet white-pebble cove, is situated on the west coast. You can ride your scooter to the northern end of Ano Meria and hike down for 45 minutes, or take a 15-minute boat transfer from Angali (€5 return). Agios Nikolaos Beach can be reached via an easy, scenic 15-minute coastal footpath from Angali. Galifos Beach, a secluded rustic cove popular with clothing-optional swimmers, is positioned along the path between Angali and Agios Nikolaos. None of these remote beaches have sunbeds, umbrellas, or food stalls, so packing water and snacks is essential.

Important Beach Safety and Riding Regulations

Navigating coastal routes in Folegandros requires responsibility. Under the Greek Traffic Code and your rental agreement, driving scooters, motorbikes, or ATVs on sandy beaches, fragile dunes, or off-road donkey trails is strictly prohibited. Riding outside designated municipal roads increases the risk of accidents and voids all insurance policies. Always park your vehicle in designated public lots above the coves. Furthermore, remains cautious when driving down steep, winding coastal descent roads, particularly in strong summer winds. For novice drivers and families, an ATV is highly recommended for beach trips, as its automatic braking systems provide comfort on steep declines.
