Agios Nikolaos is the beach we recommend to anyone travelling with children: a sandy bay on the south coast, a 20-minute walk west of Agali, with tamarisk trees that throw real shade almost to the water, a shallow seabed and two tavernas behind the sand. There is no road, and that is its secret: everyone arrives on foot or by boat, so it never fills up the way Agali does.
How to get there
By scooter or ATV you ride as far as Agali: 5 km of paved road from Chora, about ten minutes. Park above Agali beach and carry on by foot. The road ends there for every vehicle, ATVs included.
The coastal path starts at the western end of Agali, passes above Galifos and reaches Agios Nikolaos in about 20 minutes. It is easy, with a short climb at the start and no shade at all; wear closed shoes and carry water.
The small boat leaves from Agali in the summer months, usually several times a day in July and August, and is the option for pushchairs, grandparents and big bags. On a windy day, ask in the morning whether the afternoon sailings will run.

What to expect
Sand rather than pebbles, and a seabed that deepens slowly. There are a few sunbeds in the tamarisk shade, and the two tavernas serve from midday to late afternoon with their tables almost on the sand. There are rooms to rent, but no showers and no parking.
The bay faces south and is sheltered from the meltemi, which makes it one of the beaches that rescues a day when the north wind wrecks the north coast. The rocks at both ends are good for a mask and snorkel. It is not a nudist beach. In August it is busy by noon, but even then there is space at the far end.
Tips
The shade lasts all day, so there is no need for an early start. Bring cash for the taverna, water shoes for the rocky ends and a small bag, because whatever you carry, you carry along the path.
