Fira is the cove that walkers find and drivers do not: a strip of dark pebbles under the cliffs, about 20 minutes on foot from Agali, with no road, no shade and one of the best sunset views on the south coast. If you want a beach to yourself in the middle of August, this is it.
How to get there
Fira has no road of its own. By scooter or ATV you ride to Agali, 5 km of asphalt from Chora, about ten minutes, and park above the beach. The path starts at the eastern end of Agali and follows the shore under the cliffs; ask at Agali exactly where it begins, because it is not always obvious. It takes about 20 minutes, is narrow, has loose stones in places and is completely exposed to the sun. Closed shoes, not flip-flops.
Some people also come down from the Chora side on the old paths; it is a longer descent that needs a good sense of direction, so ask locally before you try it.

What to expect
Dark pebbles, water that deepens quickly and is astonishingly clear, and rocks on both sides for a mask and snorkel. There is no shade at all, and no sunbeds, taverna, showers or rooms; the only facility is the parking back at Agali. Fira is nudist-friendly and almost always empty.
The cove is on the south coast, so meltemi mornings are usually calm, while a southerly wind pushes waves onto the pebbles. It is not a beach for children: a path, deep water and no shade.
Tips
Go in the morning, before the sun climbs above the cliffs, and leave before midday or bring an umbrella and stay. Carry at least a litre and a half of water per person, a hat and water shoes for the pebbles. If you stay for the sunset, remember that the path back is 20 minutes with no lighting; keep a torch in your pocket.
No shade, no water and a weak phone signal. Start early, tell someone where you are going and do not walk the path in the dark without a torch.
The road is paved all the way to Agali, so a Road Runner 125 scooter is more than enough; leave your things in its top box and walk down with a backpack. Helmets and 24-hour assistance are included.
