Can I reach Agios Georgios by scooter?

No. After the asphalt ends beyond Ano Meria there are about 4 km of rutted, gravelly dirt track, which is not for a 125 scooter and is not covered by the scooter's insurance. It needs an ATV, always on the marked track.

What does the meltemi do to Agios Georgios?

It ruins it. The bay faces north, so the north wind comes straight in with waves and lifts the sand. On days with a strong meltemi choose the south coast, Agali or Agios Nikolaos, and keep Agios Georgios for a calm day.

Is there shade or a taverna at Agios Georgios?

Shade yes, from the tamarisks at the back of the beach, and it is one of the few northern beaches that has it. There is no taverna, no sunbeds, no showers and no water, so bring everything with you. The nearest tavernas are in Ano Meria.

Agios Georgios is the big bay of the north: sand and pebbles, a line of tamarisks and nothing else, at the end of a 4 km dirt track beyond Ano Meria. It is the most remote beach on the island you can reach with a vehicle, superb on a still day and useless when the meltemi blows.

How to get there

ATV only. From Chora take the spine road, pass through Ano Meria and carry on until the asphalt ends, about 8 km. From there the dirt track drops north for about 4 km to the bay, with ruts, gravel in the bends and dust; about 12 km in total and 35 to 40 minutes from Chora. Park at the end of the track, above the beach.

A scooter is not an option: the track is not for a 125 and riding off the asphalt on a scooter is not covered. On foot from Ano Meria it is over an hour each way on the same dusty track with no shade, so almost everyone rides.

What to expect

A wide bay of sand and pebbles, a sandy seabed in the middle and rocks at the edges that are very good for a mask. The tamarisks give real shade, rare in the north. There are no sunbeds, taverna, showers or rooms, only the parking and the little chapel of Agios Georgios that gives the bay its name.

The bay faces north and is exposed: the meltemi hits it head-on with waves and blown sand. On calm days, though, the water is shallow, clear and family-friendly, and even in August you share the bay with a handful of people. It is not particularly a nudist beach.

Tips

Go only on days without meltemi: check the forecast or ask us in the morning, and if the north wind is strong choose the south coast instead. Bring everything with you, water, food and an umbrella for when the sun leaves the trees. Fill up at the island's only petrol station, on the Chora–Ano Meria road, and combine the trip with matsata at the tavernas of Ano Meria on the way back.

The last 4 km are dirt: ATV only, always on the marked track, because riding off-road voids the insurance. A scooter is the wrong tool here.
