Folegandros or Milos? An Honest Comparison from Locals

The two islands are an hour apart by ferry but live at different speeds. Milos is five times larger (151 km² versus 32), with an airport, over 70 beaches, organized tourism and options for every taste — from beach bars to fishing hamlets like Klima with its painted boathouses. Folegandros is the opposite: a miniature island where everything happens on foot or by scooter, mass tourism never arrived, and the Chora is among the most beautiful in the Aegean. If you want activities and variety, Milos wins. If you want decompression, authenticity and romance, Folegandros has no rival.

Milos has the showpieces: lunar Sarakiniko, boat-trip Kleftiko, the multicoloured volcanic rock. But many of its best beaches require a boat or a 4×4, and in summer you share them with crowds. Folegandros plays a different game: fewer, smaller beaches — Katergo, Livadaki, Ambeli — which you often enjoy nearly alone, even in July. On Milos the experience is 'I saw something unique'; on Folegandros it's 'I had something unique to myself'. Choose by what matters more to you.

On Milos, distances are serious — Adamas to Pollonia is a half-hour drive, and the southern beaches take considerably longer on dirt roads. Many visitors end up in a car. On Folegandros, two wheels are the natural medium: 20 minutes crosses the island, parking is easy everywhere, and the cost is small — scooters from €25 and ATVs from €65 a day with free delivery. In practice, on Folegandros you never 'lose' time in transit; every ride is five minutes of views.

With just one hour of ferry between them and frequent summer sailings, the Milos–Folegandros pairing is one of the smartest island-hopping combos in the Cyclades.
