The logic of the day: wheels from minute one
On a day trip, dead time is the biggest enemy. The island bus links only port–Chora–Ano Meria on a sparse schedule, and taxis are few — rely on them and you'll see half of Folegandros. The fix: book a vehicle before you come and we'll be waiting at Karavostasi as the ferry docks; handover takes five minutes, helmets and map included. At day's end you drop it back at the port before boarding. With rides of 10–20 minutes between stops, one day covers all the essentials — as long as none of it is spent waiting.
Morning: Chora, the Kastro and coffee with a view
Ride straight up to Chora (3 km, 8 minutes) and park at the entrance. Start with the medieval Kastro while the lanes are still quiet, continue through the three squares and have coffee under the trees. If you have the energy before the heat, the Panagia path (a 15–20 minute climb) delivers the island's finest view and the photos of the day. Total: a relaxed 2–2.5 hours. Before leaving, stop at a bakery for a cheese pie and water — supplies for the beach that comes next.
Midday: the swim — Katergo for adventure or Agali for ease
Time for the day's swim, with two scenarios. Scenario A — you have an ATV and an appetite for adventure: head south to Katergo; the ride plus final footpath takes about 40 minutes from Chora, but lands you on the island's most spectacular beach, often nearly empty. Scenario B — you want comfort and lunch by the water: go to Agali (10 minutes on asphalt), swim in shallow water and eat fresh fish at a taverna right on the beach. Either way, allow 2.5–3 hours including lunch.
Afternoon: Ano Meria and the ride back
Before turning back, ride the ridgeline to Ano Meria — the 5 km with sea views on both sides may be the island's most beautiful stretch. Stop at the Folklore Museum if time allows, or simply for matsata or a sweet in a taverna courtyard. If your ferry leaves late, close the day with a final swim at Karavostasi itself — five minutes from the boarding point, with a shower practically next to the ship. Hand back the vehicle, climb to the deck and watch Chora shrink on its cliff — you'll already know you're coming back.
