Where to Stay in Folegandros: Chora, Agali, Karavostasi or Ano Meria?

If it's your first time on the island, Chora is the obvious — and correct — choice. Step out of your room and you're in the squares, restaurants and little bars; the Panagia sunset is a stroll away; and at night you walk home, no driving needed. Places inside the pedestrian core have all the magic of the lanes but mean carrying luggage by hand — those on the edges, near the parking areas, combine atmosphere with convenience. The one drawback: in summer the central squares stay lively late; light sleepers should pick a room slightly outside the village heart.

Agali is for those dreaming of a towel–sea–taverna holiday with zero transfers. You stay on the island's only organized sandy bay, swim before breakfast and eat fresh fish with your feet still wet. The paths to Agios Nikolaos and Galifos start here too. The 'but': at night your options narrow to the bay's tavernas, and for Chora's life you need wheels — 5 km of winding but well-paved road. With a scooter parked outside your room, the combination becomes ideal: sea days, square evenings.

The port is Folegandros' most underrated base. The pros: you step off the ferry and you're home in five minutes (priceless with suitcases or on a late arrival), accommodation is often friendlier on the budget, you can swim on foot at Karavostasi, Vardia and Fira, and there are tavernas by the water. The character here is quiet and local — nothing like a postcard set, and that's part of the charm. On two wheels, Chora is 5–7 minutes away for evenings out. Ideal for travellers with tight ferry connections or anyone wanting a calm base.

Ano Meria isn't a 'village' in the classic sense — it's a long, scattered farming settlement of themonies, the island's traditional farmsteads, spread across the northwestern plateau. Stay here if you want absolute quiet, star-filled skies and the island's best traditional tavernas on your doorstep. You're also closer than anyone to the wild western beaches — Livadaki, Ambeli, Agios Georgios. The non-negotiable: your own vehicle, ideally an ATV, because the bus runs a sparse timetable and everything here presumes mobility.

The truth is that on Folegandros the 'right area' matters less than on big islands: nothing is more than fifteen minutes away. What actually shapes your trip is whether you have your own transport.
