The short answer
Late May to late June, and September: these are Folegandros' golden windows. Warm sea (especially in September), everything open, dinner without waiting, and beaches nearly to yourself. July is lively but still manageable; August is the peak — a wonderful atmosphere, but everything bookable gets booked early: rooms, tables and vehicles. Our fleet sells out around August 15th almost every year, so if you're coming in August, reserve your vehicle the moment you book your room.
May – June: the island wakes up
May is the hikers' month: the island still green, temperatures around 22–26°C — perfect for the old stone trails — and hardly anyone around. The sea is brisk (19–21°C) but swimmable for the brave. From mid-June everything shifts gear: the sea hits 23°C, businesses run at full tilt and the squares come alive in the evening — yet without queues or pressure. Rental prices are at their season low, and vehicles are available even last-minute. For many people — us included — this is the best overall window.
July – August: peak season and the meltemi
High summer brings 28–32°C, a 24–25°C sea, and the signature meltemi — the northerly wind that cools the afternoons but kicks up waves on the north-facing shores. The practical takeaway: on strong meltemi days head for the southern beaches (Katergo, Agali, Livadaki) which stay sheltered, and save Agios Georgios for days with southerly winds. August — especially the fortnight around August 15th — is when this small island genuinely fills up: book your room, vehicle and key dinner tables weeks ahead. The reward: the festivals, the packed squares and the island at its most alive.
September – October: the connoisseur's secret
September may be the smartest month for Folegandros: the sea at its warmest (24–25°C), the meltemi easing, the August crowd gone and prices dipping again. Nearly everything stays open until the end of the month, and the sun still has strength for full beach days. October is quieter and more of a gamble — with a good weather week you get summer with nobody around, but some businesses start closing and ferry schedules thin out. For hiking, though, there is no better month.
Our recommendation, season by season
For a first visit: mid-June or the first half of September — the balance of warmth, life and calm. For couples after romantic sunsets without a crowd: late May. For groups chasing energy, festivals and buzzing squares: August, booked well ahead. For hikers and photographers: May and October. Whichever window you choose, a vehicle matters just as much: the bus covers only the central spine, and the island's finest corners — from Katergo to Agios Georgios — need your own keys.
